About the Role:


This position is for a Laboratory Manager. The role will be based in the central laboratory facility located at head office in Breakspear Park, Hemel Hempstead and will be responsible for the management of the day to day work carried out in the laboratory to support the business units, contract fillers and raw materials/ingredients suppliers.


Whilst the role will be based at the group head office, some travelling nationally and internationally will be expected to support the business and business units and achieve corporate targets.


Reporting to the Group Operations Quality Manager you will function as the line manager for the Microbiology, Analytical Chemistry and Packaging lab teams. You will act as the liaison between the company internal and external stakeholders providing expertise in areas of Food Quality and Food Safety.


Key Responsibilities:


  • To protect and enhance corporate Brand integrity through implementing and maintaining business processes that assure the food safety, quality and fitness for purpose of all finished goods, and support business objectives of supply continuity, customer service and cost optimisation.

  • Manage the operation of the Group Central Quality Assurance Laboratory and its assets maintaining them to ensure peak performance at short notice. Work with a range of internal & external stakeholders at all levels of organisation, e.g. procurement, logistics, factories, R&D, Innovation, PLC QSE, international, global suppliers, co-packers, Pepsi International, local authorities.

  • Responsibility for gaining and continue accreditation to ISO17025.

  • Maintains laboratory information system identifying needs and problems, implement suitable quality improvement strategies and techniques (RCA, SPC, FEMA etc.) establishing priorities; testing; writing user manuals; training employees; maintaining security and confidentiality.

  • Influence & support strategy for prime material sourcing, supplier approval and co-packer management via the analysis of raw materials, ingredients and finished products.

  • Lead & Support resolution of material & product quality issues.

  • Establish & achieve a strategic product sampling programme to measure “in trade” product quality in all territories.

  • Lead the laboratories through new testing technology ensuring that CQA labs are uptodate and relevant to soft drinks and raw materials testing capability.

  • Maintains the laboratory equipment performance by establishing quality standards, developing operations, quality, and troubleshooting procedures; ensuring staff compliance, certifying instrument performance; arranging equipment replacement, service, and repair.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:


  • Experience of soft drinks or food manufacturing including food hygiene & food safety.

  • Managing Processes, Presenting Technical Information, Management Proficiency, Equipment Maintenance, Training, Analyzing Information, Quality Focus, Lab Environment, Technical Understanding and Strong leadership and influecing skills are essential

  • Working knowledge and understanding of international managment systems (HACCP, ISO 9001,22000, BRC and AIB) is essential

  • Laboratory ISO 17025 standards

  • Competant IT skills

  • In depth knowledge of quality improvement and problem solving tools

  • Degree in Microbiology or Food Science related subjects is advantageous but not essential.

  • RIPHH Accredited HACCP Intermediate Level.
