Our R&D team consists of highly trained scientists and professionals who work collaboratively with internal and external expert partners. Our team use science and technology to transform the future of soft drinks, creating products and packaging that help our consumers to ‘enjoy life’s everyday moments’ with a positive impact on environment and society.

 

As R&D Sustainable Packaging Manager, you will apply your knowledge of materials, packaging, sustainability, and technology to develop and deliver more sustainable and innovative packaging, including Life Cycle Assessment thinking.  Contributing to the development of a long-term innovation pipeline, working in partnership with global technical and marketing teams to ensure this is aligned to strategic business priorities for brands, breakthrough innovation and Circular Economy system changes.  You will work with internal partners and collaborate with external partners to deliver global innovation projects that contribute to our overall brand strategies and support our healthier people, healthier planet strategy ensuring we embed sustainability by design into our packing for the future.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Supporting the delivery of the Britvic sustainability strategy, with ownership of the delivery of defined elements of the plan.
  2. Ensure projects are delivered with appropriate governance and risk management. Ensuring confidentiality and intellectual property rights are appropriately managed; actively managing the mitigation actions, with appropriate engagement with stakeholders.
  3. Lead projects to develop new packaging concepts, designs and materials with suppliers and academic partners.
  4. Identify global innovation opportunities, engaging in global innovation eco-systems related to circular economy, sustainability, and waste management.
  5. Partner with internal teams and take proactive steps to reduce the environmental impact of plastic packaging and futureproofing ‘beyond plastic’.
  6. Maintain and build robust relationships with the supplier community on next generation packaging opportunities, building internal and external capability.
  7. Represent Packaging Innovation in sustainability and recyclability forums with internal stakeholders & external partners (suppliers, academia, industry bodies).
  8. Build and maintain a x-functional network within Britvic (globally) to ensure inspiring packaging innovation projects and concepts are aligned to relevant business needs and stakeholders.
  9. Liaise with external partners and suppliers regarding packaging compliance and development.
  10. Build and maintain a network of contacts within sustainability, food/beverage, and packaging industries.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:

  1. In depth knowledge and understanding of packaging, innovation, and exposure within a sustainability and/or circular economy industry.
  2. Ability to translate consumer trends, competitor activity and environmental issues into insights and strategic direction for Packaging Innovation.
  3. An understanding and/or awareness of environmental compliance.
  4. Knowledge of waste management process and passionate about environmental and sustainability initiatives.
  5. A strategic innovative mindset, comfortable in fast-paced environments with the ability to engage and excel technical detail while considering the bigger picture and “outside in” perspectives.
  6. Knowledge of marketing, legal and regulatory challenges to be considered in packaging innovation and development.
  7. Expert understanding of current environmental sustainability legislation, technologies, and trends.
  8. Understanding of packaging manufacturing processes; primary, secondary, tertiary, and print technology.
  9. Technical Research skills in material science or design.
  10. Ability to think creatively to address technical challenges and deliver against the business strategy.
  11. Good organizational skills and the capability to manage multiple projects.
  12. Self-management of task and time, with the ability to prioritise accordingly.
  13. Strong Stakeholder Management skills; influencing, communication and engagement.
  14. Strong analytical skills; both quantitative and qualitative
  15. Strong project management experience
  16. Working knowledge of IT systems such as MS Office is essential.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Educated to degree level, ideally Masters level within a Technical discipline (Materials science, Chemistry, Engineering or packaging technology).
  2. Relevant Packaging Qualifications are desirable (e.g. L5 QCF Diploma in Packaging Technology).
  3. An academic qualification linked to sustainability and/or packaging.
  4. Experience in closed loop sustainable systems and circularity economies.
  5. Experience in R&D Project Management in multiple packaging formats.
  6. Experience of leading packaging projects from ideation to execution, working with cross functional teams.
  7. Experience of Insight generation and opportunity identification from trend, consumer, and technical opportunities against business objectives. 
  8. Disruptive innovation project experience, utilising Design Thinking and Agile approach. 
  9. Experience of managing long term research projects and good scientific research skills.
